Descriptive essay. Matty Healy

I know how he looks, how he moves, and how he speaks, yet I have never actually seen him. The first impression of him was through his voice – soft and dulcet, just like chocolate with a typical Manchester accent. The highly expressive British accent gives its own relish to his character and when he sings, his accent turns into posh. The only source for me of knowing him is through the lyrics of his songs and interviews that he gives. You would be right to think that the person I am talking about is a British musician. His name is Matthew Healy and he is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of “The 1975”. With a classic look of a rock singer, he may give an impression of an ordinary emo singer from a rebellious band that desperately wants to go against the current. He is usually dressed in black from head to toe, just like one of those gothic-hipsters roaming the streets during the 60s. His messy style implies that he doesn’t truly care about his physical appearance. This is what people actually think about himself. In fact, he adequately has put together a distinctive style of a hipster. This young chap has a slim figure and most of the time wears ripped up skinny-fit jeans accompanied by a leather jacket. Keeping all in black, he likes to add layers and textures to his outfit, whether it’s a bracelet or a necklace. Half of his face is covered with long curly jet-black hair. While both sides are slightly clipped close to the head, the rest of his curls are gathered in the middle bursting like a cataract of water over a broken dam. The hairstyle seems so funny sometimes, as his stuck out ears become more expressive, when he tries to hide his hair behind his ears.  During concerts, his wet curls are constantly messing around his face, hiding his eyes. A quick shake from right to left and his pale face is free again. In fact, this is his most popular hairstyle. You can see him, with red, yellow, purple or even with bright blue hair. Matt keeps his hair short in such cases, as the constant bleaching has done its worse of making his hair to look dry. His long curls may hide sometimes the emotions that he expresses, still I can see how damaged and tortured he may look while singing. But when he smiles, his light brown eyes can no longer be seen and his whole face is left with only wrinkles. Cocaine addiction made his eyes look tired and even sad, but they can be rather surprisingly seductive and alluring, as well. The finishing trait, when he puts on his eye pencil, which makes his eyes look more expressive. The entire concert hall is filled with darkness, and within this darkness only light pink and purple neon lights spread light across the hall. Matthew’s silhouette is visible against this background and an extraordinary mix of rock, funk and synth-pop music, fills the air with some sort of exotic sounds. This kind of indie music, it expresses the band’s denial and resistance to the everything that is “square” and it claimed to be considered as a meaningful type of popular music.
Matthew grabs the microphone and suddenly an invisible bond ties them together. Their relationship lasts for only hour and half, but it looks like that this two just meant to be together. He seizes her roughly, throws her back and forth, then grasps and sways gently from side to side, passionately holding her closer to his body. The funky moves that he invented by himself, perfectly go with the band’s rhythmic music and Matthew is more in a hipster style than ever. Irony and authenticity are the main traits of hipster culture, which is felt in the lyrics of band’s song. And his songs, become the reflection of his own philosophy of relationships, narcissism and modernity.
